When people think of Croatia, they often picture the sun-drenched coastline of Dalmatia – Split, Dubrovnik, and the islands further south.
But northern Croatia tells a different story.
In Istria and on the island of Krk, you’ll find a more relaxed, less crowded side of the country – where Italian influences blend with Croatian traditions, and where travel feels slower, more local, and surprisingly diverse.
For couples, this part of Croatia offers something different:
- Food-focused experiences
- Scenic drives through countryside and coastline
- Quiet seaside towns
- A more relaxed rhythm compared to the south
Istria: A Culinary and Cultural Escape
The Istrian peninsula, stretching between Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy, is one of the most distinctive regions in the Adriatic.

It doesn’t feel entirely Croatian – and that’s exactly its charm.
Here, you’ll notice:
- Italian-style architecture
- Bilingual signs
- A strong café culture
- A slower, more refined pace
It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down – perfect for couples who prefer experience over checklists.
Truffles, Local Food & Simple Moments
Istria is famous for its truffles – one of the region’s most prized culinary treasures.
Across the countryside, local producers offer:
- Truffle oils
- Truffle spreads
- Fresh seasonal products
One of our favourite moments was an unplanned stop at a small local shop, tucked away from the main roads, almost cave-like from the outside. Inside, shelves were filled with truffle products – oils, pastes, preserved truffles – far more than we expected.
We spent longer there than planned, choosing a few things to take home: truffle paste and truffles in oil, perfect for simple pasta dishes. It was one of those small, authentic travel moments that stay with you – unplanned, but memorable.

Pula: Roman History by the Sea
At the southern tip of Istria lies Pula – a city where history is impossible to ignore.
Its centrepiece, the Pula Arena, is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world, built nearly two thousand years ago. It stands as a striking reminder of the region’s ancient past.
But beyond its landmarks, Pula feels:
- Lived-in
- Relaxed
- Less crowded than southern hotspots
For couples, it’s a place to wander without pressure – exploring quiet streets, stopping for coffee, and enjoying the atmosphere rather than rushing between sights.
Krk Island: Easy Access, Unexpected Beauty
From Istria, our journey continued towards the island of Krk – one of the most accessible islands in Croatia.
Unlike most Croatian islands, you don’t need a ferry.
Instead, you cross the impressive Krk Bridge – a long, sweeping structure connecting the mainland to the island. The drive itself becomes part of the experience, with winding roads and wide-open sea views creating a real sense of arrival. Descending from the cliffs adds a slight edge of adrenaline – just enough to make the moment more memorable.
A Different Kind of Croatian Island
Krk stands out immediately.
Unlike many Adriatic islands known for their dry, rocky landscapes, Krk feels:
- Greener
- Softer
- More varied
Often referred to as the “Golden Island,” it offers:
- Hidden coves
- Small coastal towns
- Clear, inviting water
Beaches, Towns & Slow Travel
Like much of Croatia, beaches here are mostly pebble or rocky – but incredibly clean and perfect for swimming.
What makes Krk especially appealing for couples is the atmosphere:
- Less rushed than southern islands
- Easy to explore by car
- Plenty of quiet spots away from crowds
During one of our drives near Punat, we stopped at a small, almost empty beach. No crowds, no noise – just the two of us and the sound of the sea. A simple moment, but one of the most relaxing of the entire trip.

Why Visit Istria & Krk as a Couple?
This region offers a different side of Croatia:
- Less crowded than Dalmatia
- Strong food and wine culture
- Easy road trip access
- A balance of coast and countryside
It’s ideal if you’re looking for:
- A slower start to your Croatia trip
- A more local, less tourist-heavy experience
- Something beyond the typical itinerary
How to Include Istria & Krk in a Croatia Trip
Istria and Krk fit naturally into a northern Croatia road trip.
You can:
- Start in Zagreb
- Head towards Istria
- Continue to Krk
- Then travel south towards Dalmatia
This route creates a journey that gradually shifts from:
- Central European landscapes
- Mediterranean coastline
If you’re travelling by car, it’s also easy to extend the journey further. On one of our trips, we continued towards Trieste and then to Venice – just around four hours from Krk – turning the trip into a broader European adventure.
Is It Worth Visiting Istria & Krk?
Yes – especially if you’re looking for a different perspective on Croatia.
While southern Croatia delivers iconic views, the north offers:
- Subtle beauty
- Culinary depth
- A more relaxed pace
For couples, it’s not about ticking off landmarks.
It’s about:
- Driving without rushing
- Stopping where it feels right
- Enjoying the journey as much as the destination
