Not every trip to Croatia needs to be fast-paced.
Between the famous towns and busy coastal hotspots, there are places where time slows down – where the focus shifts from sightseeing to simply enjoying where you are.
For us, that place was Grebaštica – a small seaside village just 15 km from Šibenik, where we arrived after landing at Zadar Airport.
Why Stay in Grebaštica?
At first glance, Grebaštica looks like many Dalmatian coastal settlements:

- A waterfront lined with cafés and restaurants

- Long promenades perfect for slow seaside walks
But once you arrive, it feels different.

Grebaštica sits along a sheltered bay, which makes the sea:

Unlike many parts of Croatia, the beaches here are:

One small surprise for us was the water temperature – it felt quite cold during our visit in the second half of June. Perhaps just a little early in the season.
That said, swimming here was still a highlight.
And having a rooftop pool at our accommodation more than made up for it. We found ourselves spending long, unhurried hours there – enjoying panoramic views over the bay, with the sea just a short walk away.
During the hottest part of the day, we naturally slowed down. Long, relaxed lunches replaced any ambitious plans – and honestly, that felt exactly right.
Getting There: A Scenic Coastal Drive
Reaching Grebaštica is straightforward.
The main coastal road, D8, runs along the Adriatic and connects most Dalmatian towns.
Driving here is:
- Slow but scenic
- Full of sea views and spontaneous stopping points
Speed limits change frequently, and local drivers can follow quite closely – something that might feel unusual at first.
The key is simple:
take your time, follow the signs, and stop whenever the views invite you to.
Where We Stayed (And Why It Worked So Well)
Our first impression set the tone immediately – relaxed, welcoming, and exactly what we needed after the journey.
We stayed in a local apartment hotel, booked well in advance – something that’s essential when travelling to Croatia in summer. Apartments Holidays Roko turned out to be a perfect choice, and one we would happily recommend.
We specifically chose a place with a rooftop pool, knowing that early-season sea temperatures can be unpredictable – and it worked out perfectly.

It was the kind of place where settling in felt effortless – where mornings started slowly and evenings naturally stretched a little longer, without any need to rush.
Food & Evenings by the Water
Just across the road, the seaside promenade offered several restaurants.
The experience was exactly what you hope for in coastal Croatia:
- Fresh seafood
- Generous portions
- A relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere
- Beautiful views across the bay and surrounding hills
Dining by the water is always special – but on calm, warm evenings, it becomes something more.
We especially enjoyed grilled octopus and other seafood dishes, paired with local wine and the soft sound of the sea in the background.
When to Visit (Important Tip)
We arrived just before mid-June – right at the start of the season.
Even then:
- Accommodation in the area was almost fully booked
- Availability was very limited
- Having a dedicated parking space made a big difference
👉 Along the Croatian coast, it’s best to book at least 6 months in advance – especially for summer travel.
Who Grebaštica Is Perfect For
This isn’t a destination for:
- Nightlife
- Busy attractions
- Packed itineraries
It’s ideal for couples who want:
- A quiet base near Šibenik for a few nights
- Easy access to the Dalmatian coast
- Time to relax between more active travel days
How to Include Grebaštica in Your Croatia Trip
Grebaštica works perfectly as:
- A base between Zadar and Split
- A quieter alternative to larger coastal towns
- A place to slow down during a longer itinerary
Final Thoughts
Grebaštica wasn’t meant to be a highlight.
It was simply a stop for a few nights – a place to pause before continuing further south.
But in the end, it became exactly what we needed:
- A place to rest
- To slow down
- To enjoy the quieter side of Croatia
And often, those are the places you remember the most.
