Flying to Croatia is easy. But driving there? That’s where the journey becomes part of the experience.
For years, we chose the road – travelling from Latvia all the way to Croatia by car. And judging by the number of Baltic and Polish number plates you’ll spot along the Adriatic coast, we’re far from alone.
These trips started when our kids were small, mainly because of flight costs. At first, it felt like a challenge – long distances, unfamiliar roads, and a bit of uncertainty about whether it was the right decision.
But over time, we adapted. What once felt demanding gradually became something we truly enjoyed. We even began adding small detours and stops along the way, turning the journey into an experience rather than just a transfer.
For couples, this kind of road trip offers something flying never can:
- Total flexibility
- Spontaneous stops
- A gradual transition from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean
This guide is based on our own experience – what worked, what didn’t, and how to make the journey smoother and more enjoyable.

Best Route from Latvia to Croatia by Car
After trying different variations, one route consistently proved to be the best balance of speed, road quality, and scenery:
Riga → Warsaw → Bratislava → Graz → Maribor → Zagreb
This route:
- Uses well-maintained motorways
- Avoids slower secondary roads
- Offers logical and comfortable overnight stops
There are alternatives via the Czech Republic, but accommodation costs there – and especially in Austria – can be noticeably higher.
How Long Does It Take to Drive to Croatia?
Realistically, the journey takes:
- 2 full days of driving
- Around 1,800 – 2,000 km total
A comfortable structure for couples:
- Day 1: Riga → Slovakia (~1,000 – 1,200 km)
- Day 2: Slovakia → Zagreb (~500 – 700 km)
Pushing further might seem tempting, but it usually leads to unnecessary fatigue – and takes away from the experience.
Day 1: Latvia to Slovakia (The Long Drive)
This is the most demanding part of the journey.
Driving from Riga to Warsaw alone takes around 10 hours, so many travellers choose to:
- Leave late evening or at night
- Reach Poland by morning
From there, it’s still another 500+ km to Slovakia.
Couples Tip: Make the Journey Comfortable
Long drives can feel very different when you’re sharing them as a couple.
What worked for us:
- Regular stops every 2 – 3 hours (especially after entering Poland)
- One proper meal stop during the day
- Bringing simple food (a thermos and instant meals work surprisingly well)
We often stopped at roadside restaurants between the Lithuanian – Polish border and Suwałki – less crowded, reasonably priced, and a good place to stretch your legs.
Later, depending on how we felt, we would stop near Warsaw – sometimes just for a quick break and a simple meal from what we brought with us.

Overnight Stop: Slovakia
After a long first day, Slovakia is the perfect place to rest.
Areas around:
- Žilina
- Trenčín
offer:
- Affordable accommodation
- Easy motorway access
- A calm, restful atmosphere
Important: Motorway Vignettes
You’ll need vignettes (toll permits) for:
- Slovakia
- Austria
They can be purchased online in advance.
Approximate prices:
- Slovakia (10 days): €15–20
- Austria (10 days): ~€10
👉 Always check current prices before travelling.
Day 2: Slovakia to Croatia
The second day feels significantly easier – especially after a good night’s rest.
From Slovakia to Zagreb:
- Around 7 – 9 hours
- Smooth motorway driving
- Scenic stretches through Austria and Slovenia
This section feels more varied:
- Slovakia is relatively flat
- Austria brings dramatic mountain scenery
- Slovenia softens into rolling landscapes

Driving in Croatia: What to Expect
Once you leave the motorway:
- Roads become slower but far more scenic
- Coastal routes are beautiful but winding
- Travel times increase noticeably
This is where the real Croatian road trip begins.
Whether you head towards Plitvice Lakes or drive straight to the coast, it’s always worth leaving the motorway occasionally. Even short detours can turn into some of the most memorable parts of the journey.
Is Driving to Croatia Worth It for Couples?
Yes – especially if you value the journey as much as the destination.
Driving gives you:
- Freedom to explore
- Flexibility in your itinerary
- A shared experience that becomes part of the trip
It’s not the fastest way to reach Croatia – but it’s often the most rewarding.
Final Thoughts

The landscapes slowly changed, the air became warmer, and the pace of life softened long before we reached the sea.
And when you finally arrive at the Adriatic coast – it feels earned.
