Jurassic Coast for Couples: A Scenic Walk to Old Harry Rocks

This post is part of our Dorset couples travel series, where we share easy, scenic, and memorable experiences for two. In this guide, we explore one of the most iconic coastal walks in Dorset – the Old Harry Rocks walk.

May always feels like the perfect moment to rediscover England together. Longer days, softer light, and just enough warmth make coastal walks irresistible. That’s exactly what inspired us to plan a couples’ escape to Old Harry Rocks, one of the most recognisable landmarks along the Jurassic Coast.

This trip was extra special because we shared it with another couple – friends visiting from Scotland. If you’re looking for a relaxed yet memorable day out for two (or even four), this walk is ideal: scenic, easy, and full of moments to pause and enjoy together.

Why Old Harry Rocks Is Worth the Visit

Rising dramatically from the sea, Old Harry Rocks are striking white chalk formations that mark the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast.

When the skies are clear, you can even spot the rocks from Bournemouth – we had seen them many times from afar before finally visiting. But nothing compares to experiencing them up close. Our first impression was unforgettable: towering rock formations surrounded by shimmering water, glowing in the sunlight. It’s one of those views that truly feels worth the effort.

Geologically, these stacks are part of the same chalk ridge that forms Seven Sisters Cliffs and Beachy Head. Over thousands of years, erosion has sculpted these pillars into the dramatic formations we see today.

There’s also a touch of folklore – “Old Harry” is said to refer to the devil himself, who supposedly once slept on the rocks. Whether myth or not, the place has a raw, elemental beauty that’s hard to ignore.

A Gentle Coastal Walk for Couples

One of the best things about visiting Old Harry Rocks is that you can’t simply drive up to them—you have to earn the view with a walk. Luckily, it’s one of the easiest and most rewarding coastal walks in Dorset.

We started at South Beach Car Park, the closest parking spot to the trailhead. From there, it’s about 1.8 km (1.1 miles) each way.

The route is mostly flat, making it perfect for couples who prefer a relaxed stroll over a challenging hike. On one side, you’ll pass peaceful farmland; on the other, sweeping views of Studland Bay.

In spring, the walk becomes even more enjoyable, with wildflowers in bloom adding subtle colour and a gentle scent to the air. The sounds of birds and the open landscape create a calm, easy-going atmosphere. While you won’t be completely alone – this is a popular route – it still feels spacious enough to enjoy quiet moments together.

What Is the Best Time to Visit Old Harry Rocks?

Unlike some Dorset locations that work year-round, Old Harry Rocks are best enjoyed from spring through early autumn.

Our favourite time to visit is early May to late June, when the weather is usually mild, the landscape is green, and the crowds are still manageable. September is another great option if you’re lucky with the weather.

Keep in mind:

  • The area is fully exposed to the elements—sun, wind, and rain
  • For the best views, aim for a clear day with a few clouds to add texture to the sky

Extending the Walk: Ballard Cliff Loop

We decided to extend our walk into a circular route of around 5.5 km (3.4 miles) by continuing southwest along the coast.

This section forms part of the South West Coast Path, one of the UK’s most famous walking routes.

After spending time at Old Harry Rocks – taking photos from every possible angle – we continued towards Ballard Cliff.

From here, the views open up even further:

  • On a clear day, you can see Poole and Bournemouth
  • Looking along the coastline, you’ll spot Swanage

This is where we paused for a simple picnic – something we’d highly recommend for couples. We brought sandwiches and tea, sat on the grass, and took time to talk, reflect, and enjoy the view. No blankets, no rush – just a quiet moment together with the sea in front of us.

The Route Back

Instead of retracing our steps, we turned inland, looping back through a quiet rural settlement before joining an asphalt road for an easier return to Studland.

Although Google Maps suggests around 1.5 hours, we spent closer to four hours on this walk. Between photos, breaks, and conversations, it naturally becomes a slower, more meaningful experience.

We also passed a small residential area with newly built houses, and it genuinely felt like a peaceful and attractive place to live – especially with such a coastline on your doorstep.

Practical Tips for Visiting Old Harry Rocks

  • Parking: Managed by the National Trust. Free for members; standard fees apply otherwise
  • Busy periods: Car parks fill up quickly in summer – arrive early
  • Public transport: Buses run from Poole to Studland
  • Footwear: Trainers are fine in dry conditions
  • Safety: Keep a safe distance from cliff edges – chalk cliffs can be unstable

A Perfect Ending: Sandbanks Ferry

To round off the day, we took the Sandbanks Ferry back towards Poole. It’s a short crossing, but it adds a lovely sense of journey to the day—especially if you catch it later in the afternoon as the light softens over the water.

How This Fits into Your Dorset Couples Itinerary

This walk is a perfect addition to a wider Dorset trip. It pairs well with:

Final Thoughts

Old Harry Rocks isn’t just a viewpoint – it’s an experience best enjoyed slowly. Whether you’re walking side by side, sharing a picnic, or simply pausing to take in the view, it’s the kind of place that naturally brings you closer.

Yes, you probably won’t have it all to yourselves – but even with others around, there’s always space to find your own quiet moment.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what a couples’ trip should be about.
