West Bay in Dorset: A Perfect Jurassic Coast Day Trip for Families & Couples

If you’re planning a coastal escape in Dorset, West Bay in Dorset is one of those places that instantly captures the imagination.

Set along the spectacular Jurassic Coast, just minutes from Bridport, this charming harbour village blends dramatic golden cliffs, classic seaside charm and unforgettable coastal walks.

Famous as the filming location for Broadchurch, West Bay is far more than a TV backdrop. It’s a place for slow strolls, fresh sea air, family beach days and romantic sunset moments overlooking the English Channel.

Whether you’re visiting Dorset as a couple or planning a relaxed family day out, West Bay delivers natural beauty in abundance.

Why Visit West Bay Dorset?

West Bay sits at the western gateway to Dorset’s Jurassic Coast – a UNESCO World Heritage Site stretching almost 100 miles along southern England.

But what makes West Bay special isn’t just the geology. It’s the atmosphere.

You arrive via rolling Dorset countryside, cresting hills that reveal sudden glimpses of the sea. And then – the cliffs appear. Towering, golden, dramatic.

For couples, it’s romantic and cinematic.

For families, it’s spacious, adventurous and easy to explore.

East Beach or West Beach?

West Bay has two very different beaches – perfect for different types of visitors.

🏖 East Beach

Backed by striking golden cliffs, this is the iconic Broadchurch beach. It’s mostly pebbled, raw and dramatic – ideal for photography, coastal walks and soaking in the Jurassic Coast scenery.

🏖 West Beach

Flatter and sandier, West Beach is more family-friendly, especially at low tide when children have space to explore and paddle.

Dog restrictions apply seasonally on some sections, so it’s worth checking ahead if you’re travelling with pets.

For families, the wide open space is perfect for picnics and beach games. For couples, an evening walk along East Beach as the cliffs glow at sunset feels genuinely magical.

A Jurassic Coast Walk with a View

One of the best things to do in West Bay Dorset is follow the South West Coast Path.

Starting near the seafront car park, you can:

  • Walk along the shoreline
  • Climb up to the clifftop path
  • Or combine both for a scenic circular route

The coastal path rises steeply to around 50 metres (160 feet), offering panoramic views across Lyme Bay. The walk towards Freshwater Beach Holiday Park is about 1.5 km one way – manageable for most families with older children, and rewarding for couples looking for dramatic scenery.

Do note: the cliffs are constantly changing due to erosion. Warning signs are there for a reason. In 2019, a large cliff fall dramatically reshaped part of the coastline. Stay clear of the cliff base and enjoy the views safely from marked paths.

Despite being a relatively short route, allow plenty of time. The views demand pauses.

Harbour Life & Seaside Atmosphere

The harbour is the heart of West Bay.

Fishing boats come and go throughout the day, and children often enjoy watching the boats being lifted onto trailers in the evening. The small pier and modern marina add to the classic seaside feel.

West Bay feels lively without being overwhelming – especially outside peak summer weeks.

For families, there’s enough activity to keep children engaged. For couples, the early morning and sunset hours offer quieter, more intimate moments.

Fish & Chips by the Sea (A Must-Do)

You simply can’t visit West Bay without trying fish and chips.

Harbour-side kiosks serve freshly cooked cod, haddock and other seafood straight from local waters. Wrapped in paper, sprinkled with vinegar and enjoyed overlooking the marina – it’s a Dorset classic.

If you’re travelling as a couple, grab your food and head to the edge of the harbour at sunset.

If you’re with children, it’s an easy, fuss-free dinner option after a beach day.

Practical Tips for Visiting West Bay Dorset

✔ Large seafront car park (arrive early in summer)
✔ Public toilets and family-friendly facilities available
✔ Cafés and ice cream stalls along the harbour
✔ Easy access from Bridport (5 minutes by car)
✔ Ideal stop between Weymouth and Lyme Regis

Spring and autumn offer quieter visits with dramatic skies. Summer brings energy and a classic seaside buzz. Winter showcases wild coastal beauty – perfect for brisk walks and photography.

Is West Bay Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

West Bay Dorset combines:

  • Iconic Jurassic Coast scenery
  • Family-friendly beaches
  • Memorable coastal walks
  • Harbour charm
  • Fresh local seafood
  • Easy access within a wider Dorset itinerary

Whether you’re planning a romantic Dorset weekend or a relaxed family day out by the sea, West Bay offers that perfect mix of adventure and simplicity.

And like much of Dorset’s coastline, no two visits ever feel quite the same.
