Europe: A Continent of Many Faces

Europe: A Continent of Many Faces

While our travels span the globe, our journeys cover not just EU nations, but the wider world – from Atlantic shores to the fringes of Africa and Asia. This Europe travel guide reflects a continent we return to again and again.

Our European travels focus on landscapes, rich cultural diversity, and places that reward curiosity. From moderate-distance mountain hikes to slow travel through lesser-known regions, we explore Europe at a pace that allows its character to unfold.

So, let’s dive into what makes this continent so endlessly fascinating!

Europe: Size, Scale & People

How many countries are in Europe? Well, that depends on who you ask! The World Factbook lists 49, while the UN recognises 44. Geopolitically, nations like Armenia and Cyprus are often included, adding to the rich tapestry.

When it comes to sheer size, the continental giants are Russia, Ukraine, France, Spain, Sweden, and Germany. While we have visited both Russia and Ukraine, you won’t currently find posts about them in this Europe travel guide. In terms of population, the powerhouses are Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Spain.

But Europe’s magic often lies in its smaller gems. Beyond the famous microstates like Vatican City and Monaco, you’ll find enchanting smaller nations such as Liechtenstein, Malta, and Luxembourg. For those seeking more intimate escapes, the countries with the smallest populations (microstates aside) include Iceland, Montenegro, and the charming principality of Andorra.

It’s often in these smaller countries that Europe feels most personal – where landscapes are close, traditions run deep, and everyday life still moves to a distinctly local rhythm.

What makes Europe truly distinctive is how quickly everything changes: cross a border and the language, food, architecture, and rhythm of daily life can feel entirely different within just a few hours.

From Peaks to Prosperity: Landscapes and Economies

Europe’s diversity isn’t just cultural – it’s also economic. If you measure prosperity by GDP per capita, the list is topped by powerhouses such as Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Ireland, Switzerland, Iceland, and Norway.

For us, the true wealth of Europe lies in its breathtaking natural scenery. As avid hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, we are constantly drawn to its majestic mountains. Our absolute favourite so far has to be the Alps – Europe’s highest and most extensive range, which never fails to inspire awe.

We’ve also been captivated by the wild beauty of the Balkan Mountains and the forested ridges of the Carpathians. Yet our bucket list remains long. We dream of more adventures in the rugged Pyrenees, where remote valleys still feel untouched, and the Scandinavian Mountains, shaped by ice and silence.

And let’s not forget the smaller, but no less spectacular, ranges that offer their own unique magic – the fairy-tale Black Forest in Germany, the poetic Lake District in England, the wild, untamed Scottish Highlands, and the ancient Świętokrzyskie Mountains in Poland. The only thing holding us back from exploring them all is the need for more time!

Whether you’re drawn to Europe’s highest peaks or its quiet corners, we hope our journeys help you discover a side of the continent that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
